Executive Director: Deaconess Nurse Ministry

Deaconess Nurse Ministry is seeking an Executive Director to lead our organization into the future. The successful candidate will build upon a solid foundation developed by the current Executive Director who will retire in 2024.

We are seeking someone with a growth mindset, a strong business acumen with a track record of results, and previous leadership with a non-profit agency. A full description of the position requirements is included.

The Executive Director reports to the 12-member board of directors.

OUR ORGANIZATION

Deaconess Nurse Ministry is a faith-based organization founded in 1989 as part of the Deaconess Health System, St. Louis. We exist to care for all by providing whole-person healthcare that offers the healing love of God. We operated from 1997 to 2014 under the Deaconess Foundation (created at the sale of Deaconess Hospital). In 2014, we began operating separately from the Foundation, as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, allowing us to focus on our mission of providing Faith Community Nursing. Our nurses serve seniors and low-income adults in several ways, including health advocate and advisor, educator on health issues, developer of support groups within a house of worship, trainer and coordinator of volunteers, and provider of health screenings. Today we provide services in almost 30 locations. We also provide referrals to community resources and assistance in obtaining needed health services.

OUR STAFF

In 2023, with an eye to preparing the organization for future growth, we added a Clinical Director, who now oversees the work of our outstanding committed staff, currently nineteen full and part time nurses. This allows the Executive Director to focus on developing and maintaining relationships with clients and donors, as well as seeking opportunities to increase the number of locations where we provide nursing services.

JOB DESCRIPTION

All duties and standards of this position will be performed according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines within the organization. These examples of work are not all encompassing or restrictive and are expected to vary with changing needs and priorities. The duties for a specific position with this title will be defined and assigned by the DNM Board of Directors.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Executive Director of the Deaconess Nurse Ministry is responsible for providing overall management and direction for Deaconess Nurse Ministry, with input from the DNM Board of Directors.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management

  • Responsible for the sound fiscal management of the organization.
  • Develops an annual budget for board approval and then operates the organization within the approved parameters.
  • Seeks to grow the organization by adding more locations where Faith Nurses can provide services.
  • Assures timely collection of revenues due to the organization as well as payment of all funds owed by the organization.
  • Oversees contractual relationships with congregations, clients, and vendors, assuring organizational compliance.

Fundraising

  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues sources necessary to support the mission, e.g., private donations, fund raising events, grants, etc.
  • Maintains existing relationships with donors, grantors, and partners in ministry, and develops new relationships.

Board of Directors Relationship

  • Responsible for leading in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Facilitates regular meetings with the Board of Directors.
  • Develops relationships with members of the Board of Directors.
  • Works with the Board of Directors in developing an organizational strategic plan and regularly reports on progress of the plan.

Programs

  • Ensures that all programming and services meet the needs of those served.
  • Oversees the development and monitoring of performance indicators and reports them regularly to the Board of Directors.
  • Ensures all programming and service standards comply with all local, state, and federal standards.

People Management

  • Ensures there is a positive work environment for all staff.
  • Ensures the organization maintains a skilled staff to serve clients through appropriate hiring, development, and retention practices.
  • Ensures each staff member receives an annual performance appraisal.
  • Ensures staff are trained regarding the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as it relates to operations and clients served by the organization.

JOB REQUISITES

Education and Training

  • A bachelor’s degree in Community Health, Public Health, or Nursing. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience

  • Three to five years of management experience, preferably with a non-profit agency.

Skills and Abilities

  • An experienced leader with a growth mindset and strong business acumen.
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written, and a demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • A working knowledge of Fund-Raising, i.e., processes, practices, and grants, etc., and a willingness to ask for donations.
  • An understanding that the organization is a Christian organization that serves others in our community regardless of their religious beliefs.
  • Knowledge of current nursing and healthcare issues in health promotion as related to healthy lifestyles.
  • Knowledge of health services and resources in the community
  • Skilled at understanding political, ecumenical, and social changes and their impact on services the organization provides in the community.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Manual dexterity, coordination and skillful use of hands for working with required equipment
  • Ability to receive and express detailed information through oral communication, visual acuity and the ability to read and understand written direction
  • Ability to occasionally lift and transport items weighing up to 10 pounds
