Growing More Than Gardens: How One Neighbor Is Thriving with UCOM 

Kim* had been using a food pantry before coming across United Church Outreach Ministry (UCOM) in Wyoming, Mich. It met a basic need, but it was too far from her home. When Kim found out about UCOM, she was surprised by all there was to offer. 

“I needed a pantry, and this one works better for me because it’s closer and by appointment, with so many more fresh vegetable options!” she said. “I needed a pantry, and other pantries weren’t offering this full scope.” 

Kim loves that UCOM’s Healthy Choice Pantry imitates a real grocery store experience where she has a choice. 

“I have to say, shopping allows me to choose the food I would actually eat,” she added. She doesn’t just shop with UCOM, she takes advantage of all of the programs. “I go to all of the Eat Healthy cooking classes and garden meetings. I shop at the Farmstand for fresh, locally grown vegetables. Everything UCOM has to offer, I participate in.” 

Kim’s favorite UCOM program is Growing Green Neighbors. “The seeds are tremendous,” she said. “I would not be able to grow all of my plants if it weren’t for UCOM, as it’s just too expensive at the store, and the classes help guide me through the process. I appreciate all of the help and education on how to can and preserve all sorts of food!” 

What began as a search for access has grown into something lasting. Today, Kim isn’t just receiving support, she’s building skills, making choices, and growing something of her own.
