EdenHill Resident Makes Difference in Mission to Meru, Kenya

By Alicia Azar, EdenHill Intern
Dr. Mary Owen, a retired pediatrician and resident of EdenHill Communities in New Braunfels, Texas, recently shared her heartwarming experiences from two mission trips to Kenya. Inspired by a presentation at her church’s Sunday school, she joined her first trip in 2022 and returned in February 2025 with members of her church and family.
The journey was filled with long flights, joyful communities, and meaningful service through Friends of Mission Health.
“Going on a mission trip was something I always hoped to do,” she said in an interview. “Life gets busy, but now I finally have the time, and I want to use it well.”
In the rural community of Meru, Kenya—just north of the equator—Owen joined a volunteer team offering medical care, health education, and hands-on support. She helped administer medication to prevent intestinal parasites to children in local schools, assisted at a clinic that served more than 450 patients, and contributed to building a three-room home for a family that had been living in a nearby shack.
What touched her the most was witnessing the joy and generosity of the Meru community, especially the children who, despite having little, radiated love and appreciation.
“We may think we’re done making a difference, but there’s always something we can give,” Owen said later. “If you can’t go across the world, start with where you are.”
