CHHSM is Now Open and Affirming
The Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM) Board of Directors voted unanimously on June 9, 2015, to become an open and affirming organization of the United Church of Christ.
At the 2015 CHHSM Annual Meeting, CHHSM President and CEO Michael Readinger shared his goal to take the step to officially designate as open and affirming.
“We have spent the last few months discussing what it means to be open and affirming with our members in one-on-one discussions and in articles in our Diakonie newsletter,” Readinger said. “Our members are very enthusiastic and supportive of this decision. Fair and just employment policies are a foundation of all our members and we are proud of that.”
A move from employment policies of non-discrimination to acceptance, affirmation, and culture change is an important and powerful statement, Readinger says.
“During this process, we have lifted up the UCC motto of ‘whoever you are or wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.’ We are very much looking forward to living out this covenant.”
