Champ Homes Helps Save Lucas’s Life

In his early 30s, Lucas returned home after two years of being unhoused. He was weary and burdened by anxiety. At his mother’s urging, he sought help from Champ Homes in Hyannis, Mass., and by the time he walked through the doors, the toll of instability and isolation was unmistakable.
Once at Champ Homes, Lucas kept to himself for months. He was overwhelmed by depression, anxiety, and even the smallest daily tasks. He struggled with things most of us take for granted, like keeping an appointment, stepping outside during the day, or walking through crowded spaces.
With consistent support from Champ Homes staff, practical help, and the stability of a safe place to call home, Lucas began to rebuild. His small steps, such as making a phone call, starting a new book, or showing up for appointments, gradually added up. What once seemed too challenging became a path to lasting stability—healthier routines, learning to manage his mental health, and creating a lifestyle he could maintain with confidence and independence.
Rachel, Lucas’s care coordinator, remembers those early days well.

“Lucas and I spent a lot of time together,” she said. Some of it was to celebrate milestones, large and small, but most was about slowly tearing apart layers of depression, anxiety, frustration, and anger. Lucas was clearly suffering, but in those moments, there was a light inside him, and it was bright. There were times he wanted to give up; we rode those out, too. He is the epitome of what can happen when you put faith in yourself, ask for help, and push yourself well beyond your comfort zone.”
Over time, those small achievements and steady support made a lifechanging difference. Lucas began to feel the change in himself, and he started to recognize his own strength.
“Looking back,” Lucas said, “the key to my success at Champ Homes was the vision of what I truly wanted: to be well and to find housing in a place that would bring me back to life. What I clearly saw over time is that anybody with the willpower to positively transform their life can greatly benefit from what this organization has to offer. Not everybody that reaches out to Champ Homes is absolutely destitute, but I truly was. My success can be best described as a miracle.”
After months of searching for independent housing and facing repeated setbacks, Lucas finally secured an apartment that gave him a real chance to start over. “My patience and the content of my character were tested to the core, but in the end it was all worth the struggle,” he said.
Today, Lucas is thriving in his own apartment.
“When I say that Champ Homes saved my life, I mean it,” he said. “My heart goes out to every single person who contributed to saving my life. If you support Champ Homes in any way, this testimonial was written for you.”
