Behold, I am Doing a New Thing »

Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43: 18-19) In these verses, the prophet reveals God’s intent to bring about a new exodus that will release Israel from exile in Babylon and lead it to a home in Palestine.

Last month, the United Church of Christ Board (UCCB) on which I sit adopted a new policy regarding the qualification of UCC-associated organizations listed in the UCC Yearbook to be covered under the church’s blanket federal tax exemption.

In an essay from “The Great Divide,” the New York Times series on inequality, Daniel Goleman concludes that “reducing the economic gap may be impossible without addressing the gap in empathy.” Goleman, the author of “Emotional Intelligence,” cites research suggesting that financial differences create behavioral differences.

The third Nollau Institute retreat for the class of 2013 took place in mid-September. The topic of this session was “Forming Faithful Cultures: The Product of Leadership.” Faithful organizational cultures have everything to do with the integrity of leadership and adherence to the formal and informal covenants that bind people together in values-driven pursuit of the mission of the organization.

A couple of weeks ago, the NBC Nightly News carried a story about gun violence on Chicago’s South Side and the men and women of CHHSM member Advocate Christ Medical Center’s emergency department who saw nearly 1,100 gunshot and stabbing victims in the last year.
